DELTA HOLDS A FIVE DAY WORKSHOP ON DEBT MANAGEMENT

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance, Mr. Cornelieus Semiteje has expressed delight over the achievements of the State’s Debt Management Office (DMO) in the space of a few years.

He expressed his delight as he recently flagged off a five day workshop on Public Debt Creation and Sub-national Debt Management at the conference hall of the Olorogun Felix Ibru Secretariat.

The Permanent Secretary stated that though similar training have been done previously by the DMO, training can never be too much as the State’s DMO is in need of institutional support and capacity building to ensure effectiveness on the job, hence this training.

Mr. Semiteje welcomed the DMO team from Abuja, thanking them for their help from time to time especially as regards updating debt stock. He also solicited their continual support in areas they deem fit as he assured them of a warm hospitality all through their stay in Delta State.

The PS acknowledged the presence of the participants from other MDAs including the Ministry of Economic Planning, the office of the Accountant General, as well as other concerned ministries, stating that they are all involved in the creation and management of debt in the State.

The Team Lead of the delegates from the Debt Management office Abuja, Miss. Elizabeth Ekpeyong, applauded Delta for doing very well in comparison to other States with regards to accurate data compilation and recording functions as well as general DMO operations. She disclosed that the purpose of their presence in Delta State was to take them through the why, how, when and what of Public Debt Creation function and to ensure the effectiveness of their sub-national Debt Management.

Miss Ekpeyong stressed the need for Delta to move to the next phase as it would ensure that the States are brought to a sustainable debt level, so that Nigeria as a nation would remain auto-sustainable with regards to its Public debt portfolio.
